Jeffery Beckham serves as Vice President of Career and Leadership Development at Chicago Scholars.  In his role, Jeffery is responsible for creating pathways to career opportunities, developing the organizational leadership strategy, and developing the curriculum for the leadership development of 3926 young people who are either first-generation college-going or from low-income communities of Chicago.

Jeffery is a community leader and tech-entrepreneur known for advancing the fight for equity and creating opportunities for leadership skill development for youth and young adults. Because of this work, Jeff is a sought-after speaker delivering keynotes, commencements, and workshops for companies, universities, and organizations across the country. Over the course of his career, he’s worked in the for, and non-profit sectors building expertise in technology, youth leadership development, and strategy. He joined Chicago Scholars after working in sales, systems engineering, and digital marketing.

In 2008 he founded a digital marketing firm called Black Box Creative which he ran successfully for 10 years. Black Box Creative is a digital marketing agency that helps clients grow revenue or increase exposure and engagement with their target audience. Jeffery has led projects for everyone from Oscar Winner Common to Tuskegee University and has worked with numerous charitable organizations.

In 2016 he co-founded a nonprofit business development centre called the Mid South Business Association and Resource Center, which works to create economic equity in Chicago’s Greater Grand Boulevard neighbourhood.

He serves as a mentor for many young people through his work with Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity INC., New Faith Baptist Church International. As a mentor and member of the 100 Black Men of Chicago for 6 years, he’s served as Program Director and a counsellor for the 100 Black Men of Chicago’s Pathways to Success Program, which is a career emersion program for high school and college students funded by Wells Fargo. In 2018 he was elected to the Board of Directors for the mentoring organization. He served as the elected community representative on the Local School Council at King College Prep from 204-2016 and currently serves on the board at Foundation’s College Prep a middle and high school in Chicago’s Roseland Community. In 2018 he was selected to serve on the economic advisory for Operation Hope. WVON and Ariel Investments named Jeffery one of Chicago’s Top 40 Game Changers Under 40 years old and he was a finalist for the Chicago Inno 50 on Fire Award in 2016 and in November 2018 Reclaiming A Youth Foundation named Jeffery it’s 2018 Man of the Year.

Workshops

Natalie Noble - “Black and in College!”

A three part discussion addressing the state of the black student while attending a PWI. In this workshop, students will indulge in a deep conversation about what it means to be a black student, why university increased diversity, strategies to utilize to avoid failure as a black student at PWI, and how to embrace the black culture in order to enhance the respect and decrease the educational barriers between the black and white student.

LaShawn Holloway - “Keys to Unlock Opportunities"

Do you want to know a few unwritten rules to landing your dream job? Do you want to obtain the keys to unlocking opportunities to secure your future? This session is for those who have started a resume but looking for ways to strengthen it before sending to future employers/companies.

Morgan Dania - “The Power of Networking”

The Power of Networking workshop will help students get an insight of how effective face to face communication can be when diving deeper into your career.

1LUV - “Intro to Body Positivity"

PEACE! Come discuss Body positivity with a collective of Black, Brown, and Queer Womyn! We are here to affirm your essence and work towards redefining beauty!

Activist in You - “Black Out”

Black Out is an engaging judgment free zone activity. Participants are free to express themselves & respect their opinions while learn & engage with fellow participants.

Ashli Giles- Perkins - “Hidden Figures : Everything they never wanted you to know"

Everything ‘they’ never wanted you to know about Black history, Black figures, and the Black Civil Rights movement. This workshop will test your knowledge, extract your passions and desires, and have you questioning not only this country but yourself. Even when so much has been lost, there is still so much more to gain.

Paru Brown - “BYP100 CHICAGO - Organizing 101”
The BYP100 Chicago Chapter will be leading an organizing 101 workshop to offer information and inspiration to fight for collective liberation. We will be presenting what BYP100 does currently, the basics of how to organize, and giving people who attend a call to action.
Youth for Black Lives - “The teamwork of Community Organization”
Youth For Black Lives will host a workshop that inspires participants to find the Activist within them. Community organization allows Black people and POC to find homes away from home. We hope to show participants that they can find a passionate topic to curate an event around. They can create the safe spaces that should exist for us but often times do not.
Kwyn Townsend Riley - "D9 Greek Panel: Pledging at a PWI”
Are you interested in Greek life? Wanna learn more about the 9 black Greek letter organizations? This is a exclusive opportunity to hear from Greeks who pledged at a PWI! This will be moderated by our founder Kwyn Townsend Riley and a host of other Greeks!
